I am being called nearly every day now by 024 7724 004, which is a Coventry number. If I answer I either get a message talking about PPI Insurance, (which I've never taken out anyway) or get a blank message. They then usually leave a message on my answerphone. When you ring answerphone you get a `blank` message

I've had a few calls by this number now. There's a telemarketing company in Coventry called clear-intelligence.com located next to other businesses with very similar phone numbers. They even have a tacky, thrown together website crammed full of amateurish errors. I think it's them. Might be worth mentioning to your police contact, fluffy...

PPI Scam
Phoned my mobile and came up as starting with 024.
When I answered a recorded message said 'we haven't yet processed your PPI payment, press 5 for more information'. I did, it then gave a message that the person was unavailable and to leave a message. I did indicating that it was both unwanted spam and a scam and not to bother ringing me back again.

Government act now.
I would gladly vote for the first politician to stand up in parliament and get a ban on these nuisance cold calling, spam texting ppi and accident claims. The only thing i did was to go a 'reputable' money lending website where i HAD to give my phone number in order to apply for a loan and that company like all the rest has passed on my imfo (without my consent) to so called 'sister' companies who are clearly abusing the system. I can't qualify for ppi and i've not had an accident, so therefore the £2,485.76 and the minimum of £2,800 'guaranteed' to go into my bank account today cannot be true. I know i have the common sense not believe these scams, but there are people out there who are vulnerable/elderly or just struggling to make ends meet. And it is these very people that they prey on because an extra couple of thousand is very tempting, but when you have to give them an up front fee or phone them for 20 mins at a premium rate it gets costly with little or NO CHANCE of any return.

PPI
On the news today they were talking about these type of calls and it is just random dialling and to ignore them, do not reply STOP or they know your number exists and will call again, put the number in your mibile directory and then when they call do not answer it.

Rightly annoying
Thanks to whoever this number belongs to I had my phone taken off me in school today as I didn't realise it wasnt on silent. I was extremely annoyed and even more so to find out it wasn't really someone who needed to get in contact with me but was by fact some kind of idiot who must have lots of time on there hands. I have tried to phone back through anger however it just comes up call failed. Despise things like this.

I received a call from this number today. Did not answer because I'm a suspicious kind of guy. Thanks for the above information. If I had my way, and could surface some motivation, I would like to have a short chat with the person responsible for making the decision to annoy thousands of people, followed by a swift kick to the genital region, followed by another and so on. In short, I need way to release small amounts of built up frustration collected by the normal day-to-day, so having the person available for fly kicks would be beneficial.

silent calls
If a number calls and the line is silent when answered its because the company is trying to call too many people at the same time and dont have enough marketing personel to deal with all the numbers automatically rung! This is illegal and if enough people complain to ofcom (type in generic search engine) the company can be fined up to £2million. Ive done this as they called today and the line was silent, i urge others to do the same!

Affilaite Marketing People
The main issue is that these "insurance claim" and PPI" companies pay marketers to bring in the enquiries - so they actually don't give a hoot how they work or their ethics.

Every now and again you will get a call from an out of area number, be it abroad, probably India - and all they do is check the numbers are live and then put the phone down so they dont get charged.

They then compile a list of numbers and sell them to the marketing companies who set up the SMS "text based" messages regarding anything. And, the main problem is that if they fail to raise your call back or text, they then try another service.

My main gripe is that the mobile companies who allow it to happen - surely they can block numbers once they hit a limit of SMS messages being sent in minutes or hours - then at least the whole thing would stop once they paid for the messages instead of using the networks who offer free texts.

And how ironic - the words I had to type in to post this message started WHICH PPI

The best way to deal with these spammers is......
....to waste their time. They need to process loads of calls in order to find the one dough-head which makes them money.

If everyone can waste their time to the extent that it doesn't become worth while, then they'll get nowhere.

Calls from Indian call centres respond very well the the "Say nothing except 'Yes'" method, where you literally say nothing except "Yes" (different tones and intonations etc)

Another one is just to tell them what they want to hear, but make sure you give false name and address.

My wife got this call this morning, she said that she had sent her letters herself and was they calling from one of the banks, the guy hung up. Then again about two hours later they called back, I picked up and said I was very interested, but first I would like there details, they then hung up. Why would anyone give bank details over without knowing who you are giving them to...

I will try again if they call back.

If you want to stop these call or at least minimise them then register you phone numbers with the Telephone preference service (TPS). I did this a few years ago and I now never get cold calls.

Complain to the right people
For all of you receiving calls from this number:
Register with the TPS (it takes 28 days to start working) and complain to OFCOM.

To complain call OFCOM on 0300 123 3333.

Quote from the OFCOM website: "Where an organisation is repeatedly making abandoned and/or silent calls, Ofcom may take enforcement action, including fining the organisation up to £2 million."

If you don't complain, they won't take action.

It's not a UK number, it's an incorrectly displayed number from Africa. Do not answer it since all the comments above about ofcom and hash keys and such will not work with those people. Block it on your mobile or home phone so you don't answer by accident.
